It's been a week since I entered the state of Florida for my first venture as a snowbird. And so I don't think I'm being too impulsive to say that Sarasota and I were made for each other! I have walked my fanny off in all directions, found the Y and worked out three times, begun what is apparently the mission of comparing every single spinach salad in the metropolitan Sarasota area, socialized with friends and family, and now await the arrival tomorrow of best childhood friend Joan for 5 days of fun and laughter in the sun.
Even the locals are amazed at the string of sunny days with 80 degree temperatures. To say this is paradise is an understatement. I can walk to two different movie theaters. . . one a traditional multi-complex, the other a charming independent movie house in an artist's colony.
Today I spent a memorable day literally getting to know my sister-in-law of over two decades. I regret all the time I have NOT spent with Sue. My time with her is all the more sweetened by the fact that she is now out of the long tunnel that was her chemo-radiation treatments for a stage 4 cancer during the past year. She is recovered and back into the swing of things. When I saw her in September, she was not able to get off the couch. A miracle in action. She came over this morning and we walked around the city, had a wonderful lunch together, did a little shopping and found out that we were great friends. What a treasure.
This morning I also went to the Y first thing in the morning. And I found that I absolutely love swimming laps in the pool there. And when I'm on the cardio equipment I can watch TV! And I can go in the steam room or the sauna or the hot tub. And it's close enough that I can go every morning of the week. And I intend to. The Y is about 5 minutes from my house by car.
So. . . sun, walking to town and Whole Foods, movies, working out, friends and family. Heaven. Truly.
